eSIM Help & Troubleshooting 2026 — 12 common fixes

Quick fix overview

  • QR code fails: Maximize brightness, use manual activation code
  • No signal abroad: Enable Data Roaming on the eSIM profile
  • No internet despite signal: Set APN value from provider email
  • Carrier lock: Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock
  • Hotspot fails: Match Cellular and Hotspot APN values
  • Migration to new phone: Provider issues new QR within 24h

An eSIM is usually set up in under 60 seconds. But when something goes wrong it gets frustrating fast — especially if you just landed and need data right now. This page collects the 12 most common eSIM issues with concrete diagnosis and step-by-step fixes for iPhone and Android. Above: a step-by-step setup walkthrough. Below: the troubleshooting FAQ.

Activation in 6 steps

  1. Before you fly: connect to Wi-Fi (activation needs internet) and have the QR-code email ready.
  2. Settings → Cellular (iOS) or Connections → SIM Manager (Android) → “Add eSIM”.
  3. Scan the QR code with your camera (or enter the activation code manually).
  4. Name the profile — e.g. “Turkey May 2026”. Helps when switching later.
  5. Important: enable data roaming for the new profile — otherwise no signal abroad.
  6. On arrival: set home SIM to “voice/SMS only” or off, set the travel eSIM as “default for data”.

Quick check: did it work?

  • Status bar shows two signal icons (home SIM + travel eSIM).
  • Mobile data uses the travel eSIM (small “5G” or “LTE” indicator).
  • Connectivity test: open browser, load any website.
  • Speed test: speedtest.net should report local-carrier downlink (50+ Mbps in cities).

Most common problems & fixes

When things break, the cause is almost always one of three categories: wrong roaming settings, missing APN configuration, or carrier lock. The 12-item FAQ below covers each scenario with concrete tap-paths for iOS and Android. If you can match your symptom to one of the entries, you can usually fix the issue in 2–5 minutes without contacting support.

Decision tree: what to try first

  1. No service icon at all? → check Carrier Lock (FAQ #7).
  2. Service but no internet? → check APN and Data Roaming (FAQ #2).
  3. Worked yesterday, broken today? → check plan validity (FAQ #8).
  4. 5G missing? → check 5G mode and provider plan terms (FAQ #9).
  5. Tethering broken? → check hotspot APN (FAQ #10).
  6. Switched phones? → request re-issue from provider (FAQ #5/12).

If nothing helps

Send us a short email with provider, plan name, device model and a description of the issue at support@esimchart.com. We mediate between you and the provider. Response usually within 24 hours on business days. Refunds and re-issues happen via the provider directly — esimchart cannot release plans on behalf of carriers.

Troubleshooting

12 common eSIM problems with fixes

1) The QR code will not scan — what now?

Symptom: camera does not recognize the QR code. Diagnosis: low brightness, low contrast, or you are scanning on the same phone you want to install on. Fix: turn screen brightness to maximum on the source device; if same-device, save the QR image and use the manual option in iOS (Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → Use Activation Code), copying the activation string from the provider email.

2) Mobile data network available, but no internet — what now?

Symptom: signal bars and 'LTE/5G' show but pages do not load. Diagnosis: APN not set, data roaming disabled for the eSIM profile, or DNS issue. Fix: 1) Settings → Cellular → eSIM profile → Data Roaming = ON. 2) Cellular Data Network → APN — enter the value from your provider email (e.g. 'yesim' for Yesim). 3) Restart the phone. 4) If still failing, switch off the home SIM temporarily.

3) Two eSIM profiles with the same name appear — what to do?

Symptom: duplicated travel-eSIM line in Settings. Diagnosis: QR code scanned twice, or provider allowed two activations. Fix: deactivate both profiles first (toggle Turn On This Line OFF), then delete the older one (Settings → Cellular → tap profile → Remove eSIM). Most QR codes are one-time use, so do not delete the active line if unsure.

4) eSIM works in country A, but not in country B — what now?

Symptom: same eSIM profile worked in Spain but does not connect in Morocco. Diagnosis: your plan does not include country B (read the plan description), or the provider has no roaming partner there. Fix: contact provider support — sometimes a one-time top-up adds the missing country. Otherwise buy a separate eSIM for country B (still cheaper than home roaming).

5) Migrating from iPhone to Android (or vice versa) with eSIM — how?

Symptom: new phone but old eSIM stays on the old device. Diagnosis: eSIM profiles are bound to the device, not the carrier account. Fix: contact the provider with order ID and IMEI of the new phone. Most providers (Yesim, Simbye, Airalo) issue a free re-installation QR code within 24 hours. iCloud/Google backup does NOT carry eSIMs across.

6) How do I delete an eSIM and reinstall it later?

Symptom: want to free a profile slot but keep option to reuse. Diagnosis: many QR codes are single-use. Fix: before deleting, contact provider support and request a re-issue link. Then delete (Settings → Cellular → profile → Remove eSIM) and use the new QR. iPhone 13+ stores up to 8 profiles, so you rarely need to delete.

7) Carrier lock blocks the eSIM — how to unlock?

Symptom: 'Could not activate eSIM' or activation succeeds but no service. Diagnosis: phone still locked to home contract. Fix: Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock. If 'SIM Restrictions Active', contact home carrier with IMEI (*#06#) and request unlock — usually free after the contract minimum term. Most EU carriers process unlocks within 7 days.

8) My plan expired, what now?

Symptom: 'No service' on the eSIM line, plan timer at zero. Diagnosis: validity period elapsed. Fix: most providers offer in-app top-up (Yesim, Simbye, eSIMania) — you keep the same eSIM profile and just add data + days. If top-up is unavailable, buy a fresh plan and install the new QR code; you can keep both profiles to retain order history.

9) Plan claims 5G but only LTE shows — what to check?

Symptom: 5G icon never appears even in city centers. Diagnosis: phone in LTE-preferred mode, plan locked to LTE, or carrier roaming partner does not provide 5G to wholesale eSIMs. Fix: 1) Settings → Cellular → Voice & Data → 5G On (iOS). 2) Restart phone after enabling. 3) Check provider FAQ — some providers explicitly state 'LTE only' on certain plans, even if 5G is on the marketing page.

10) Hotspot / personal hotspot does not work on the travel eSIM — fix?

Symptom: connecting laptop or tablet to hotspot fails. Diagnosis: provider blocks tethering, or hotspot APN is wrong. Fix: 1) Settings → Cellular → Personal Hotspot → check that the eSIM line is selected as data source. 2) On iPhone: Settings → Cellular → eSIM profile → Cellular Data Network → set the same APN under both 'Cellular Data' and 'Personal Hotspot'. 3) If still blocked, the provider plan does not allow hotspot — check before buying.

11) Roaming settings are wrong — how to fix?

Symptom: home SIM eats data abroad while travel eSIM stays idle. Diagnosis: data routing on home SIM, or both lines have data roaming on. Fix: 1) Settings → Cellular → Default Voice Line = home SIM. 2) Cellular Data = travel eSIM. 3) Home SIM → Data Roaming = OFF. 4) Travel eSIM → Data Roaming = ON. Allow Cellular Data Switching = OFF to prevent surprise charges.

12) After phone backup/restore my eSIM is gone — recover?

Symptom: factory reset, restore from iCloud — eSIM profile missing. Diagnosis: eSIM profiles are NOT included in iCloud or Google backups. Fix: contact your provider with order ID and new IMEI; they issue a re-installation QR. Some carriers offer 'eSIM Quick Transfer' (iPhone 13+, iOS 16+) that moves profiles between iPhones during setup — useful for upgrades.
