How we rate eSIM providers — methodology 2026

Our promise

esimchart rates plans objectively, transparently and reproducibly. This page documents exactly how our comparison works and which criteria count. Our eSIM rating methodology is published in full so anyone can audit the logic — there is no hidden weighting, no pay-to-play, no editorial favors. If a provider thinks we got something wrong, they can email us with the data and we update.

If you want to know how to compare eSIM providers fairly, the five criteria below are a good starting point. They are the same five we apply to every plan in our database.

Criterion 1 — Coverage

Coverage measures where the eSIM actually works. We score on three dimensions: countries supported (the more, the better for multi-country travelers), carrier partnerships (we prefer providers who roam onto the largest national operator — e.g. Türkcell in Turkey, NTT Docomo in Japan, Vodafone in Germany), and urban-versus-rural reach. A plan that lists “200 countries” but roams onto third-tier carriers in each scores lower than a plan with 50 countries on top-tier networks. Coverage data is cross-referenced against Ookla median speeds and our own field tests.

Criterion 2 — Speed

Speed covers LTE and 5G availability and real-world throughput. We check whether the plan delivers 5G in advertised regions (some providers advertise 5G but throttle to LTE on wholesale agreements), median LTE speed in major cities (target: 60+ Mbps), latency (target: 30–60 ms) and throttling policies (some plans throttle to 256 kbps after a fair-use cap — we flag this). For unlimited plans, the throttling threshold matters more than the headline capacity.

Criterion 3 — Pricing

Pricing means real $/GB, not headline cost. We calculate the effective price per GB so plans of different sizes compare fairly. A 1 GB plan at $5 has the same $/GB as a 5 GB plan at $25, but a 50 GB plan at $40 might be the real winner if you actually use the data. For unlimited plans we compute $/day instead. Promotional discounts are noted but the ranking uses the regular list price — promo prices fluctuate too much for fair comparison. Pricing transparency includes hidden fees: providers that add activation surcharges or required app subscriptions score lower.

Criterion 4 — Activation

Activation rates the speed and reliability of getting online. We measure QR-code quality (clean codes scan first try, blurry ones force manual entry), setup time from purchase to data flow (target: under 90 seconds), Apple iOS and Google Android compatibility (some providers fail silently on Pixel), and whether email delivery is fast (some providers take hours to deliver the QR). We also score whether the provider supports manual activation codes for users who cannot scan, and whether iOS “Quick Transfer” works for phone upgrades.

Criterion 5 — Support

Support measures response time, channels and language coverage. We test by sending a real activation issue to provider support and measuring response time (target: under 4 hours during business hours), available channels (chat, email, phone), language coverage (English at minimum, German and Spanish a plus), and whether refunds for non-activatable eSIMs are processed promptly. Providers that ghost on support issues lose points fast — refunds must clear within 14 days for an honest rating.

How is the Best-Deal label calculated?

The default sort “Best Deal” combines two formulas:

• For limited plans: the plan with the lowest price per gigabyte across active inventory wins.
• For unlimited plans: the plan with the lowest price per day wins.

Users can re-sort by price, $/GB, validity or rating at any time — the filtering is transparent and reproducible. The “Best Deal” tag is not the highest-commission plan. It is the one with the best price/performance — calculated automatically from the data.

Weighting

All five criteria carry equal weight in the overall provider rating. A provider with strong coverage and weak support averages out the same as one with weak coverage and strong support — both signals matter. Plan-level ranking on country pages prioritizes pricing and coverage because those are the deciders on the moment of purchase.

What we do NOT rate

• Subjective factors: app design, marketing copy, brand recognition.
• Influenced reviews: we never publish paid reviews.
• Provider ad budget: larger ad spend never improves position.
• Influencer endorsements: not a factor in our rating.
• Cookie window: 30-day vs 7-day cookies do not change ranking.

Data freshness

eSIM prices and plan availability change constantly. We refresh data:

• API-fed plans: hourly via provider datafeeds and direct partner APIs.
• Manually maintained plans: several times per week; full audit weekly.
• Country guides: reviewed quarterly by the regional editor.
• Methodology page: reviewed every six months and re-published.

The current update timestamp is visible on every country page.

Provider audit policy

Providers can request an audit if they believe data is wrong. Email audit@esimchart.com with the plan ID and corrected data; we re-validate against the public datafeed and update within 7 days. Providers cannot directly edit their own ratings — only fact-correct plan data.
